About Kentucky State
Kentucky is a south-eastern state bounded by the Ohio River in the north and the Appalachian Mountains in the east, with Frankfort the state capital. The state’s largest city, Louisville, is home to the Kentucky Derby, the renowned horse race held at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The race is preceded by a 2-week festival and celebrated in the Kentucky Derby Museum year-round.
The state is home to the world’s longest cave system in Mammoth Cave National Park, as well as the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the contiguous United States and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River.
Rivers define Kentucky’s boundaries except on the south, where it shares a border with Tennessee along a nearly straight line of about 425 miles (685 km), and on the southeast, where it shares an irregular, mountainous border with Virginia.

Kentucky State Flag
The flag was designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher in Frankfort, the state capital. It was adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly on March 26, 1918.
The flag consists of the Commonwealth’s seal on a navy-blue field, surrounded by the words “Commonwealth of Kentucky” above and sprigs of goldenrod, the state flower, below.
